SPIRITUAL COUNSELLING

Spiritual counselling is a holistic approach to therapy that integrates philosophical thoughts, spiritual, and religious beliefs with traditional psychological practices. It aims to address the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of an individual's well-being.

Spiritual counselling can be beneficial for individuals seeking to resolve existential questions, cope with loss, enhance their spiritual practices, or integrate their faith with daily life challenges. It provides a supportive space where clients can explore and strengthen their spiritual beliefs, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Key elements of spiritual counselling include:

  • Holistic Approach: Considering the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—in the therapeutic process.

  • Spiritual Beliefs: Incorporating the client's spiritual or religious beliefs into the counselling process to provide meaningful support and guidance.

  • Purpose and Meaning: Helping individuals explore their purpose, values, and meaning in life, often through the lens of their spiritual or religious framework.

  • Healing and Growth: Facilitating personal growth and healing by addressing spiritual concerns and fostering a deeper connection with one's faith or inner self.

MEDITATION

The key difference between guided meditation and meditation lies in the structure and presence of external guidance.

Guided Meditation: In this form, a teacher, narrator, or guide leads the practitioner through the meditation process. This may include verbal instructions on breathing, visualization, mindfulness, or specific relaxation techniques. The guide helps direct attention, offering cues to stay focused, relax, or move through different stages of meditation. Guided meditation is especially helpful for beginners or those seeking specific outcomes like stress relief or sleep improvement. Guided meditation and hypnosis can be very similar experiences although there are differences.

Unguided Meditation: This refers to self-directed meditation where the practitioner meditates independently without external instructions. The person may focus on their breath, a mantra, or other internal techniques they’ve learned, staying present without external direction. Unguided meditation requires more self-discipline and experience, as the meditator needs to guide their own attention and mindfulness. Both forms can be effective, but guided meditation offers more support, while unguided meditation allows for more personal exploration.

I offer guided mediation practice through my social media, please subscribe. I am also supporting more experienced practitioners to build up their own unguided meditation practice.

LIVED EXPERIENCE

I have been practising meditation and contemplation since the age of 16.

My experience is varied, drawing from different traditions. I initially engaged in Christian contemplation (aka meditation), following the teachings of Teresa of Ávila and Ignatius of Loyola, while also exploring the writings of Christian mystics and the Desert Fathers. During my teens, I also received training in mind control techniques.

Later, I embraced the Himalayan Yoga tradition and the Buddhist meditation practice of Satipatthāna. I studied yoga therapy and have some experience with non-dual teachings. Yoga philosophy has provided me with a deeper sense of understanding and inner peace. It has complemented my Christian roots, offering me a more holistic and integrated perspective on spirituality.

I began teaching in my 20s and have been supporting people in their spiritual and meditation practices ever since. I have led retreats, facilitated meditation groups, and served as a one-to-one spiritual guide on many occasions.
