RESTORATIVE PRACTICES

Restorative Practices are a set of principles and techniques aimed at building community and managing conflict by focusing on repairing harm and restoring relationships. These practices emphasize accountability, healing, and mutual respect.

The most known type of Restorative Practices is victim-perpetrator meditation (or conferencing) where work is being done after the harm happens to understand the impact of the incident, process the harm and rebuild trust. The work is facilitated by a trained Restorative Practitioner. However Restorative Practices cover various other fields and generally aim to support human relationships and members of communities to cooperate better.

The five restorative principles are:

relationship · respect · responsibility · repair · reintegration

Some elements of restorative practices include:

  • Circle Processes: Structured dialogues where participants sit in a circle to discuss issues, share perspectives, and build connections. This can be used for community building or conflict resolution.

  • Restorative Conferences: Facilitated meetings between offenders, victims, and community members to discuss the harm caused and collaboratively develop a plan to repair it.

  • Using Restorative Questions: A framework for addressing incidents by asking questions that focus on the impact of the behaviour, the needs of those affected, and how to make amends.

Restorative practices can be applied in various settings, including schools, workplaces, and communities, to address conflicts, improve relationships, and create a supportive environment. By promoting open communication, empathy, and collaboration, these practices help individuals understand the impact of their actions and contribute to a more harmonious and inclusive community.

It is an excellent approach for team building and managing conflicts and grievances among staff.

It can also help family members, and partners get along better and understand the needs and challenges of each party.
